From more than 100 pictures in my “cars” file I picked these few that illustrate the beginnings of my dad’s lifelong interest in cars. I had some fun trying to figure out their chronological order. Maybe you can judge how well I did.

Those are my three aunts, my dad wearing the banded hat.

Is this the same “machine”? (That’s what they called a car.) On the back of this pic my dad wrote: “9/22/1924, Eugene Nill and family, notice my first car, 1914 Ford I bought for $500.”

Now a married man. I recognize the house in Dayton, Ohio (where I was born).

I don’t know the story of this fender bender, but I’d bet the farm that is my dad’s car—CN-777. Carl Nill had a “thing” for the number 7.

He could afford a Cadillac but wouldn’t dream of paying for a car wash.

So…how’d I do?

I didn’t spend a lot of time at my cousins Jim and Lisa’s house, but back when our Michigan home bordered their Indiana home I’d sometimes drop in on them for a couple of hours just to see what was happening. And since they raised five kids, there was always something happening. They eventually grew used to Cousin Sherry showing up unannounced and let me just be part of the family scene for a spell. (That is still the case.)

On one of those visits I snapped this common sight. A kid on the counter.

This is Hannah. (Don’t you just love the sugar canister?) She’s having herself a sweet treat.

Hannah’s now a mama of daughter Lily, who’s about this age now. This morning I read Hannah’s blogpost that alerted my love for a good series and sent me to my photo archives.

I snapped this picture a few months ago when I was in Indiana for some family time. What goes around comes around. Will I live long enough to see Lily’s baby girl on the kitchen counter?

Earlier this week I snapped a picture of Mauri with Darcy. I have quite a few pictures of those two together. Surprised? This one, in particular, caught my attention because it took me back to the late 1980s when I took a similar shot. Here they are.

A while back I “warned” you that I love series and that you might expect to see them from time to time. Well, here are two I’ve been enjoying quite a bit lately.

I first met Craig MacDonald when he was my Sunday school teacher at Berean Bible Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Even though that was in the late ’80s, I think, I still carry with me his important teachings. Craig has many interests, and he writes about them every day, faithfully, on his blog. Earlier this week he wrote about wanting to get his hands on a VW “Beetle” - ’67 or earlier – to work on. Being the charitable friend I am, I searched a photo file titled “cars” for something tantalizing to wave in front of him. I wanted to make him jealous that Paul and I started our married life with a brand new ’67 VW convertible. Oh, he was impressed.

Being always on the lookout for a good series (for me, two constitutes a series), my eyes landed on these two shots, both in that “cars” file:

Yes, that’s me at age 20…and

that’s Margaret-Rose. We sure liked our bugs. And what we wouldn’t give to have them now!

old series, new series

A while ago I issued a warning that I love series pictures and would probably be posting them from time to time. I hope that warning’s still in effect because I have a couple of fun (at least I think they’re fun) pictures series for you. The first one goes back a few years, six or more, when I made a mirror for Quinn. Just before I packed it up for shipping to Denver I took this picture to let her know it was on its way:

Not many days later I got this picture via e-mail,

showing me it had arrived in one piece. (Since then, the glass has warped and could now be used in an amusement arcade.)

Today I added a new series to my collection. It started 35 years ago when Mauri took this picture of baby Rachel and her mom, Margaret-Rose, with a sign she painted (on a stool seat) to express her joy of motherhood.

Now Rachel is anticipating the joy of motherhood (February 22), and it was time to pass along the sign, stored in the attic for such a time as this, to the next generation. Just before we packed it in the box for shipping to Philadelphia, I took this picture:

Everything has to be documented, you know. =)

The package was supposed to be delivered before Christmas. I could hardly contain my anticipation of its arrival, so large is my love of sentiment. This morning a picture showed up on our cell phones:

Rachel said we’d probably guess this was her favorite thing in the box. Mine too.
