do you know what we’re doin’ here?

One of my favorite stories came to mind today.  A few years back I was looking for a friend on a church campus being carved out of the desert near Richland, WA.  Heading to where someone said he was working, I met a little blond boy coming down the path.  “Is Pete Gibbons around here?” I said.  “He was, but I think he went home,” the boy replied,  and then quickly said, “But do you know what we’re doin’ here?” He went on to describe the building they were working on, and how it would be used at Christmas for their special holiday ministries, and that thousands of people would learn about Jesus and be able to celebrate his birth in a better way.  Only five or six years old, he not only understood “what we’re doin’ here,” he was absolutely into it.

Don’t you just long for that sometimes?
